Rotorua Boys' High School finished seventh out of 12 teams during their first run in the premier grade at the NZRL National Secondary School Competition in Auckland.

Boys' High fielded their first rugby league team in history last year, winning the second division at the national secondary school competition.

This year they moved into the premier division with all the big league schools from Auckland.

In fact, Rotorua Boys' and Tokoroa High School were the only teams from outside Auckland in the premier division.

A standout performance from impressive forward Viliame Tosi also earned him selection into the New Zealand secondary school rugby league team.

Tosi, 16, was one of about 10 players from the Rotorua Boys' first XV rugby team who made the switch to rugby league this week.

Rotorua Boys' went up against Tokoroa High School yesterday during the seventh and eighth playoff, winning the match 34-14.

Latu Vaeno crossed for an impressive five tries during the tournament, including a hat-trick against Western Springs College, while teammate Tosi picked up four tries.

Rotorua Boys' principal Chris Grinter said it was an impressive result, considering the rugby union boys played a big match on Saturday before joining up with the team.

He said there was a number of standout performances and he was happy to hear Tosi had been selected for representative duties.

"He has a good future whether it is in league or rugby."

The premier grand final yesterday was played between Kelston Boys' High School and St Paul's College, with Kelston winning the final 20-10.

The second division competition was taken out by Papatoetoe High School.
