Rotorua MP Todd McClay is encouraging local young people to apply for the 2015 Youth Awards.
The awards will recognise 40 outstanding young people in the community, across eight categories. They celebrate qualities such as leadership and target young people who have supported youth activities in the arts, culture orsports.
There are also awards for active members of youth groups, youth with disabilities and individuals or organisations who've supported or championed young people in any type of community activity. This year they feature the Anzac Youth Award which is for young people who have helped recognise the centenary of the Gallipoli landings, or helped commemorate the Anzac spirit.
As well, 25 youth ambassadors will be supported to travel to Turkey to attend the Anzac Day commemorations at Gallipoli.
"I strongly encourage people to nominate a young person they know for these awards. There are a lot of young people doing some crucial volunteer work in our communities, and it's important they are recognised for this work," Mr McClay said. "Last year, it was great to see local Arianna Cudby receive the Change Maker Award, which recognises a young person who, through embracing diversity, has created change in her community.
"These awards are a way of shining the spotlight on young people, who are role models in our community, to encourage others around them to aspire to being the best they can be."
Nominations close on April 28. For more information, visit www.myd.govt.nz.
The categories are: Change Maker, Leadership, Giving Back, Working for Youth, Youth with Disability, Youth Group, Anzac Youth Award and Youth Champion.
