Local hip hop and R&B fans will get the chance to see one of the country's greatest rappers perform live tonight.

Sidney Diamond, best known by his stage name Young Sid, will perform at Ngongotaha's Kalah Bar, alongside DJ Jayrasik, from 9pm.

The rapper is a member of popular band Smashproof, who have had several hits over the years including Brother featuring singer Gin Wigmore.

Diamond won the 2010 Maori Urban Album of the Year for his album What Doesn't Kill Me and also picked up the Maori Male Solo Artist of the Year that same year.

Kalah Bar owner/director Janina Khan said the concert was a fantastic opportunity for locals to see a well-known and talented musician perform live.

"It's an opportunity for hip hop and R&B fans to see a profiled New Zealand artist at a very economical price," she said. "And it's a chance for people to just have a good night."

Miss Khan said the concert was the first hip hop and R&B gig the Kalah Bar had hosted.

Previously the venue had staged mainly reggae and rock concerts. "Rotorua has quite a big R&B scene, so we wanted to step up and cater for that scene too."
