Woman's body found in Whakatane River

Police have recovered the body of an 83-year-old woman from the Whakatane River near Peketahi.

Her body was found at 9am while police were searching the shoreline area following reports of someone being seen in the water yesterday around midday.

Inquiries are continuing to establish how the woman came to be in the water.

Police said they knew the woman's identity and were in the process of notifying next of kin.
