A woman is in a serious condition in Whakatāne Hospital after being hit by a concrete truck.

Hato Hone St John said they were notified of a vehicle incident in Whakatāne at 8.43am and one ambulance responded.

Police said they were alerted to the incident about 8.50am involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

A witness told Stuff they saw a woman lying in between the front and back wheels of a concrete truck.

Police and St John Ambulance said the accident happened in central Whakatāne between King St and Eivers Rd, near the roundabouts.

“One patient, in serious condition, was transported to Whakatāne Hospital.” said Hato Hone St John.

Police said diversions were in place, but the road has now reopened.
