A woman pedestrian is dead after being hit by a bus in Rotorua last night.

The incident happened at the junction of Te Ngae and Coulter Rds at Owhata in Rotorua at 7.40pm.

Emergency Services are at the scene as well as the Police Serious Crash Unit.

The road where the incident occurred has been closed and will remain so for several hours.

Diversions are in place at: SH30 and Pohutukawa Dr, and SH30 and Sunrise Ave.

Senior Sergeant Karl Konlechner told the Rotorua Daily Post staff member there were still few details known about how the crash happened.

He said the bus was full of people at the time of the crash.

A Rotorua Daily Post photographer at the scene said the woman's body could be seen with a sheet over it on Te Ngae Rd.

He said the bus, an Intercity bus, was parked on the side of the road.

Another Intercity bus arrived about 9pm to pick up the passengers on the bus, he said.
