A woman has been taken to hospital with minor injuries after being hit by a car near a pedestrian crossing described by one onlooker as "bloody dangerous".

The woman was hit around 5.30pm near the pedestrian crossing on Amohia St, outside Westpac.

Bay of Plenty police district command centre Senior Sergeant Karl Konlechner said the woman was taken to Rotorua Hospital with minor injuries.

A witness, who did not want to be named, said they had not heard or seen the crash, but came outside to find the woman lying on the road.

"Other pedestrians were being really helpful making sure the road was kept clear. Her husband has been called, naturally he's devastated.

"I've always said this crossing was bloody dangerous so it was only a matter of time before something happened."
