Police are trying to work out how a woman came to be injured in her own home in a quiet Rotorua suburb yesterday.

The incident happened around 10.45am yesterday on Hodgkins St in Pukehangi.

A police spokeswoman said "an assault of some sort" had occurred and the woman required hospital treatment for "minor injuries". The woman is aged in her 20s.

"We're unsure at this moment whether the offender was known to the woman or not. We're unsure of the motivation," the spokeswoman said.

She said police would have a better idea of the circumstances of the incident once they had interviewed the woman, which they didn't expect to do until today.

Rumours the incident was a "home invasion" have not been substantiated by police.
