It has been a windy morning for Rotorua, with some people waking up to fallen branches, trees and damage.

Ngongotahā's Alecia Whakatau described how a tree had fallen onto their car and the roof of their house.

She said she heard a lot of banging as she was lying in bed this morning.

"I could hear a cracking noise and [heard] things dropping on our roof which must have been the tree about to come down."

She said they then heard a huge bang on the roof when the tree fell. This was at about 6.30am.

Whakatau said the first thing she thought of was their car, which they had just got a month ago, because that was where they usually parked it.

She was gutted because their car bonnet has been damaged, although the roof had not been.

"Our children play out there in that area.

"I'm glad it fell earlier in the morning and not when they were playing. It could have ended worse."

She said they had informed their property manager about this tree needing to be cut down, as it was getting old.

She said this had been ignored, adding if it had been cut down this would not have happened.

Whakatau said it looked like it was going to be a big job to clear the tree away, and that someone may not be able to get out and clear it away until tomorrow, which meant if something happened they could not use their car to get anywhere.

One local commented saying it had "been so windy this morning", and another said his fence had blown over.

A woman posted a photo of their rabbit hutch on its side, but said the rabbit was okay.

Another woman said they woke to discover their trampoline was destroyed.

However, a Rotorua Fire Brigade spokesman said they had not had any weather-related callouts this morning and that it had been quiet.
