Wild wigs for good cause (+video)

Crazy hair styles and out-there wigs were the order of the day yesterday, all for some of the city's bravest kids.

Businesses and schools across the city took part in the first Wig Wednesday - a new fundraising day for the Child Cancer Foundation.

Among the businesses getting behind the event was Flip Out Rotorua, with staff donning crazy wigs for the day, making their own donations and the business donating a percentage of all entry fees last night to the organisation.

Flip Out's Renae Baker said they jumped at the opportunity to support the good cause.

She said the business had supported the Foundation in the past and thought it was a great charity to help, especially given the business was set up to help youngsters.

"We do fundraisers all the time and we are real big on supporting the child cancer."

Wig Wednesday is based on the successful fundraising campaign run by one of the UK's leading cancer charities for children, young people and their families.

Child Cancer Foundation national commercial manager Jo Clark said this year the organisation decided to try a new approach to engage with the broader public in terms of fundraising - something that is fun and easy for people to participate in.

Each week more than three children in New Zealand are diagnosed with cancer and at any given time the Child Cancer Foundation is assisting more than 500 families' nationwide - offering support in hospital, at home and in the community.
