White Island quakes rumble Bay

UPDATE: A third earthquake has struck near White Island this evening.

The earthquake was recorded at 6.31pm about 10km west of the volcanic island.

It measured as a light earthquake with a depth of 5km and a magnitude of 2.6.

EARLIER: Two small earthquakes struck near White Island this afternoon.

The quakes were recorded at 2.34pm and 2.28pm but Geonet has not received any reports from anyone who felt the rumbles.

The earthquakes measured 2.1 and 2.8 on the magnitude scale and were both located 5kms west of White Island, at a depth of 5kms.

White Island is currently at a Volcanic Alert Level 1, meaning it has minor volcanic unrest.
