"We lost by two and we have to take our opportunities when we get them I suppose. We knew it was going to be hard fighting against that wind in the second half," said Fraser.
"We expected them to get up in our faces and they put a lot of pressure on us. They are a good side and we were outplayed."
"It just didn't happen out there today. Last week we were good but today the result shows otherwise. We have a few young fellahs in the team that are still learning the game I suppose.
"We haven't really gelled as much as other years but you can't really wait until the last game of the year to start bonding together. We continue to give away penalties at the ruck and that lets us down at the end of the day."
Whaka dominated territory and try scoring opportunities in the opening 40 minutes with the strong wind behind them but squandered the lot.
They had just two penalties to Ryubyn Vaipo to show for all their dominance while Greerton tackled courageously and captain Taylor Jones scored from a rare attack.
Greerton led 10-3 at the break and guided by astute tactical kicking from first-five Elliott Davies took control. Tries to hooker Tane Howe and flanker Joe Key had them ahead 22-6 before a brilliant solo try to promising flanker Sioeli Alofi fired up Whakarewarewa.
When captain Doug Edwards crashed over soon after it was all on but Greerton held on gamely for a hard fought win.
A decision by Auckland referee Angus Mabey to disallow a bonus point try in the final play of the match may be crucial in the final wash-up next week.
Whaka head coach Kopae Irihei was disappointed with the result and highlighted the line-out as under performing on the day.
"We are obviously very disappointed. This was a big opportunity for us and the boys are a bit down," he said.
"We did play well, and had a very good structure. But we missed too many opportunities, and they cost us.
"There was even an opportunity near the end to score We had a five-metre scrum but didn't make the most of it.
"And we certainly didn't hit the mark with our line-out today. It's important to have that solid in games like that, but it just wasn't working."
Next week Greerton, Whakarewarewa and Rotoiti will battle it out for the final two spots.
Whakarewarewa have Paroa and theoretically should get maximum points but Greerton Marist will have to win at the difficult environment on the banks of Lake Rotoiti in what could be the clash of the season.
"It is a must win for us. We are relying on someone else to win for us to sneak in so hopefully that happens," said Fraser.
Irihei added: "We have to go out and aim for a big win because not everything is sown up yet.
"All we can do is just do the best our side which will be getting maximum points and hopefully elsewhere things will go our way."
