Wet and windy election day looms

Election day is expected to be wet and windy in Rotorua.

Weather Watch head analyst Philip Duncan said a spring storm was moving into the region this weekend.

"We thought politics will be fired up but the weather is going to join us as a low rolls in ... with the possibility of heavy rain," he said.

"This time of year everything is fast moving so it's very hit and miss but a heavy downpour is expected to move into the region with even an isolated thunderstorm."

Mr Duncan said there was likely to be a mix of sunny spells and showers tomorrow.

"That should continue into the afternoon with a chance of a thunderstorm on Saturday so expect it to be wet and windy."

Similar weather is forecast for Sunday with frequent showers, but they should clear by about 6pm.

A low from the south is predicted to bring cooler temperatures early next week.

"It will feel like late winter again but it will be shortlived with the warmth back on Tuesday evening."

MetService has warned of similar wet weather for Whakatane and Taupo tomorrow with a high of 12C and an overnight low of 4C.
