These pictures from security cameras show the man who robbed the Westend Tavern in Rotorua on Thursday afternoon.

He was wearing a distinctive hooded top with 'G8' on the front, and words above, and possibly below.

The description police were given is a male Maori or Polynesian, approximately 178 - 185cm tall and of medium to large build.

He wore long pants, a 'snapback' type cap and dark shoes with either a white band or sole.

Police are appealing for sightings of this man prior to, or leaving, the Westend Tavern around 12.30pm on Thursday.

Police are also interested in sightings of a white four-door saloon (possibly a Honda) in the area, immediately prior to and following the robbery.

This is the vehicle police believe picked up the man in York St after the robbery as he was being chased by members of the public. They are still looking to confirm if the female driver of that vehicle was involved or thought she was helping someone in trouble.

She drove into York Street from Old Taupo Road. He got into the seat behind her and the vehicle then carried along York Street and turned right on to Miller Street.
