The Koi Boys are Danny Faifai, Kevin Keepa and Ngahere “Nuz” Ngatai sharing melodies with thousands of concert goers

The rain held off for the evening and as a result, beautiful melodies could be heard through Rotorua.

The city's annual Lakeside concert drew thousands who listened to songs 'from the 50s to now' from the mid-afternoon and into the night.

A pōhiri welcoming artists of the evening was led by the Ohinemutu kapa haka rōpū.

Mark Williams known for his hit songs in the 70s and as lead singer from 2005 in the iconic kiwi band Dragon was presented with the wero (challenge).

He was accompanied by kaumatua Monty Morrison and mayor Steve Chadwick who onstage, thanked the weather for holding out after NIWA spokesman Chris Brandolino said on Monday the concert was "unlikely to be a washout".

"There is certainly some chance of rain but if it happens it would be spotty and more likely to be just the odd passing shower."

Chadwick said it was a special occasion to be able to hear Rotorua's own voices, talent and production.

"Rotorua, it is our time to shine!"

Kellie Howell had driven up with her daughter from the Dance Central Taupo group yesterday as she was performing alongside many acts including the Koi Boys.

"We came over last night and rehearsed in the rain, it was horrific.

"The stage is a little bit smaller so they have had to modify their dance, but you wouldn't know!"

She said the event was on par with Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park where the girls had previously performed.

Steve from Koutu enjoyed the night with his family and was looking forward to the fireworks later on in the evening.

"It's a nice free community event that you can come to and have a good time."

As well as enjoying performances, people could also help fill the tummies and keep the minds sharps of local school children by supporting Ka Pai Kai Rotorua.

People can donate gold coins at the concert, or this year there is the option to donate online.
