Taupo police are asking locals to be vigilant after a spate of thefts in areas of the town.

They said recently there had been increased offending in the Vaucluse and wider Nukuhau area including a group of youths disturbed attempting to break into a house in Vaucluse Dr, letter boxes stolen from Robinson Tce in Rangatira Park, a $4000 Trance Mountain Bike stolen from the Acaicia Bay Camp, boats broken into at the Nukuhau Marina and four letter boxes stolen in Lakewood Dr.

They are also asking locals living in the Acacia Bay area to be vigilant.

"Recently there has been increased offending in the Acacia Bay area. Earlier this month a phone was stolen from a resident in Ewing Grove. The resident managed to retrieve her phone prior to Christmas at the Great Lake Bus Stop from a man described as homeless with tattoos on his arms he had a number of bags with him.

"There has also been a theft from a car towards the end of Acacia Bay Road a theft from a boat parked in Isobel Street and a theft at a home situated in Acacia Bay Road near Wakemen Road."
