Waioekea Gorge among road closures

A number of roads are closed tonight due to snow and ice. FILE

The NZ Transport has advised that SH2 Waioeka Gorge (between Gisborne and the Bay of Plenty) is closed due to snow and icy conditions.

The closure is on the eastern side of the gorge.

Contractors are monitoring the road however it is not expected to reopen for some time.

Other North Island roads currently closed due to snow and ice include:

* Desert Rd (SH1) Rangipo to Waiouru
* SH1 Waiouru to Taihape
* SH2 Matawai to Otoko, north of Gisborne
* SH46 Tongariro to Rangipo
* SH47 Turangi to National Park
* SH48 to Tongariro National Park
* SH49 Ohakune to Waiouru
