Waikite's Janina Khan and her side lost their first game since 2014 on the weekend.

Waikite's Janina Khan and her side lost their first game since 2014 on the weekend.

Waikite coach Lee Uerata has attributed poor decision making as the main cause for his side's first loss in the Baywide Premier competition since 2014.

The reigning champions lost 22-19 to Tokoroa away on Sunday after being 12-0 down at half-time.

Waikite had been unbeaten since the final against Arataki two seasons ago and were on the hunt for their sixth consecutive win this season.

And they were leading 19-17 with five minutes to go, after tries from flanker Luka Connor, centre Hineau Roberts and winger Tayla MacDougall - who also had two conversions.

But Tokoroa, who were second going into the game, capitalised off a wayward Waikite kick to take the victory.

Ureata, in his second year in charge at the club, was disappointed with the result and said his side should have stepped their game up to the next level in the second half.

"Everybody was hurting on the final whistle, mainly because we knew that bad decisions lost us the game," he said.

"Tokoroa were able to capitalise off our mistakes. We played badly and didn't deserve to win. We lost the game for ourselves.

"We played better in the second half, however we didn't shift into that second gear to take the result away from Tokoroa.

"I was very happy with our set pieces, because we dominated in the scrum and had a solid lineout, but our defence fell off too many tackles and they were soft tries."

The result sees Tokoroa leap frog Waikite into first place in the table on 27 points - one point ahead of last year's champions.

But Ureata said it was better to suffer a loss now rather than at the semifinal or final stage.

"Our unbeaten run is finally over, and in a way it's like we have the monkey off our back," he said.

"I think sometimes it can be a like a bad omen hanging over you, so it's better we have a defeat now then in the later stages of the competition.

"We want to retain the title so now we have to learn from this loss. It has happened but we have to get over it.

"If we come up against Tokoroa further down the line we will look at changing our game plan but first we move onto the next game and another win."
