Waiariki Institute of Technology has around 400 agricultural trainees, including a large intake of overseas students, ranging in age from 17 to 55-years-old.
The trainees cover Primary ITO levels 2-5 learning skills including fencing, tractor driving and farm safety.
It is one of the biggest primary industry tertiary providers in New Zealand, he said.
The award citation referred to Greg's "total focus on what is best for the trainees, and as such gets very good results.
"Trainees regard him as as approachable, patient, clued-up and a real good mate and his wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm was often the reason trainees continue their courses," it continued.
Greg said the trainees are enthusiastic to learn.
"That's why I like the job," he said.
"One of the keys of teaching is to gauge the trainees' abilities and temperament and I try to have them relaxed and help them out but also keep a professional relationship."
Many of Greg's trainees have gone on to win awards themselves - something he takes satisfaction in.
"It's great to see them progress through the industry."
They work in a range of jobs, including farm management, sharemilking and contract milking. A lot of emphasis is put on health and safety in the courses as well to minimise farm accidents, he said.
AgExcel endorsed training providers, such as WIT, to deliver quality agricultural training that meets industry best practice standards.
The tutoring programme is endorsed by DairyNZ, Beef+Lamb NZ and Horticulture NZ, and administered by Primary ITO.
Primary ITO quality assurance manager Andrew Donohue said selecting the winners was difficult from the high calibre of nominations.
Investing in the AgExcel Quality Mark and the tutor awards was a "no-brainer" for Primary ITO, he said. "Tutors can make all the difference to a student".
