Update 11.10am:

Reporter Katee Shanks, who is at Tuhoe headquarters, said the pohiri is continuing.

She said Mr Finlayson is scheduled to speak and give the formal apology at 11.30am, with the Tuhoe response at 12.30pm.

Earlier:

The Tuhoe iwi settlement day is underway in the Eastern Bay of Plenty with more than 3000 people in attendance.

A pohiri started at 9am today at Tuhoe headquarters, Te Uru Taumatua in Taneatua.

Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson and Crown delegates are to formally apologise to the iwi as part of the $170 million treaty settlement which passed into law last month.

The apology is for historical treaty breaches which included land confiscations and wrongful killings.

As part of the redress, it will see the Crown and Tuhoe co-govern Te Urewera National Park.
