Two people have been rescued on Lake Taupo after their boat started taking on water just after 2am today.

Coastguard said the pair's anchor was stuck so they were at the mercy of the wind and choppy water.

A spokesman says Taupo Rescue and Turangi Rescue were sent to help.

A police spokeswoman said the boat's engine had cut out and that the Coastguard took two people to shore.
