Two people have been injured following a crash near Kawerau.

A police spokeswoman said police were called to the two-car crash on State Highway 34 near Tamarangi Dr about 5.30pm today.

A St John spokeswoman said one person was moderately injured, while another had minor injuries.

Both were taken to Whakatāne Hospital.

About 5.50pm, emergency services were working to free one person from a vehicle.
