Rotorua's Greg Brimmer is challenging other car clubs in the city to show their support for the Two Drinks Max campaign.
The campaign is to persuade the Government to lower the drink-driving limit and encourage people to pledge to keep the roads safer by not driving after more than two standard
alcoholic drinks.
As president of the Rotorua Car Club, Mr Brimmer said the club wanted to back the campaign as it had been endorsed by club member Dean Sumner.
"We thought instead of one member we should have the whole club behind it. We are trying to get youth involved in our activities and we should be seen as leading by example.
"I think other car clubs should be involved and be proactive to try and get the youth to think about their drinking and driving habits," Mr Brimmer said.
He said he didn't drink much and if he went out for a drink on a Friday he would walk into town and then get alternative transport home. "I think two drinks should be the maximum for people to go out and enjoy their night," he said. "Any more than that is asking for trouble."
He urged people to remember that losing one's licence could mean losing one's job.
"We should be seen as more proactive in terms of getting out there and setting ourselves as role models."
Mr Brimmer said some inexperienced drivers, once they had been drinking, would drive their cars the way they drove cars on PlayStations. Young people who wanted to drive that way should take part in the motorsport activities promoted by several clubs in Rotorua, he said.
"They will be able to have their moment of thrill and be able to do so in a safe manner in a controlled environment where they won't hurt innocent bystanders."
