TV coverage aids resident's effort to clear up rubbish

One Rotorua woman's efforts to clean up the city have been brought to the small screen, helping her cause.

Local personality Kiri Danielle's five-year efforts to clean up Mt Ngongotaha of dumped rubbish caught TVNZ's eye, who featured her on its Seven Sharp show this week.

Ms Danielle said the recognition was awesome, but the best thing to come out of the publicity was more awareness, and more help.

"The response has been overwhelming. I have been inundated with messages on Facebook and on LinkedIn, of people offering to help volunteer to clean up and also some bigger offers from people willing to commit a bit more to help."

She said it was her unique approach - which often saw her returning rubbish to those who had dumped it - which piqued TVNZ's interest.

"There are a lot of people working as hard as I am to keep Rotorua beautiful.

"I have a number of ways of trying to make change and a big part of that is trying to go directly to the people who have done the damage.

"Often people dump because they want to save some money, but I can see in their rubbish they are wasting a lot. It is very illogical to me."

She said she was planning something big on the back of the Seven Sharp coverage. "There's been offers of support from really powerful and significant people in the business world."
