Treated wastewater has overflowed from a plant pond into Puarenga Stream - prompting a warning for people to stay out of the water at Sulphur Bay, Lake Rotorua.

A Rotorua Lakes Council spokeswoman has tonight issued a media advisory stating:

"People are being advised to stay out of the water at Sulphur Bay, Lake Rotorua as a precaution after a treatment plant pond that holds treated wastewater before pumping it to the forest overflowed and spilled into Puarenga Stream.

"This was due to the heavy rainfall we've had, resulting in high volumes of rainwater flowing into the treatment plant and this afternoon's break in the weather is easing the situation."

She said there would be an update issued by 2pm tomorrow.
