Taupo is preparing a big street party to show A1GP guests a good time.
Tuwharetoa St will be closed and the area will possibly be exempt from the alcohol ban next Saturday night as the area turns into a giant party. Destination Lake Taupo events manager Warwick Hall
said the party was organised just a few weeks ago to make sure there was entertainment to cater for the visitors to the town. Exactly how many people will flood into Taupo to watch the motor racing event is still unknown with 33,000 locals and visitors expected to turn up for the main day of racing on the Sunday. Mr Hall said he hoped the area would get a blanket liquor licence, which would allow bars to pour alcohol into plastic cups and people to take it out on the street. However, people would not be allowed to bring alcohol into the area and security would be tight. A food tent would be established in the Farmers carpark and four bands will play during the street party - including the popular Beat Girls to finish the night off. Mr Hall said those travelling to attend the A1GP weren't the typical "petrol head crowd" and were reasonably well off financially.
