Rotorua Boys' High School has just enjoyed its 19th annual visit from Shiba Boys' High School in Tokyo, Japan.

Every year, 24 students, accompanied by their teachers, stay with Kiwi families to experience life and schooling in Rotorua.

During their time at Rotorua Boys' High School, the Shiba students immersed themselves in school life, where they learnt how to do the school haka, Maori carving, and cooking New Zealand style.

They also played rugby and improved their English.

International dean at Rotorua Boys' High School Thuy Grinter said the Japanese students grew in confidence during their time in the city.

"Many of the activities are outside their comfort zone so their personal growth is huge, and when they leave, they take back many valuable memories of their time here at Rotorua Boys' High School."

The Shiba visit is special for the Rotorua students also, as many of the Year 10 students and the host families involve themselves in the activities, and form strong and lasting friendships.
