A severe thunderstorm watch is in place for parts of the North Island, including Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Taupō, Gisborne, and Hawke’s Bay.

Afternoon and evening thunderstorms were expected in inland areas of Bay of Plenty (from Rotorua eastwards), eastern Taupō, inland Gisborne/Tairāwhiti, and the Wairoa District from 1pm to 9pm today, the MetService said in its latest update.

“These storms have the potential to become severe, bringing localised downpours with rainfall rates of 25 to 40mm per hour,” the MetService said.

“Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas such as streams, rivers, and narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.”

Motorists are advised to take extra care, as driving conditions could become hazardous due to surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.
