Police investigating a crash on State Highway 1 near Tokoroa yesterday afternoon have revealed that the three people who died, two women and one man, were American citizens.
Another American man, who was the fourth occupant in the car, remains in a critical condition in hospital.
Police are currently liaisingwith family through the American Consulate.
Police said in a statement that no further details about those killed will be released until they were satisfied that all family notifications were carried out.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.
