Three injured in crash near Waiotapu

A person has suffered serious injuries in a two car crash on State Highway 5 today.

A police media spokeswoman said one person sustained serious injuries, while two other people suffered moderate injuries in the crash, which happened near the intersection with Waiotapu Loop Rd just after 2pm.

All three were taken to Rotorua Hospital.

Senior Sergeant Denton Grimes from the Rotorua police said he was unsure whether the crash happened at the intersection or near it.

He said historically there had been several crashes on that stretch of road.

"Time has shown it can be a dangerous intersection but I don't recall any [crashes] recently.

Nobody was trapped in the crash, but the fire service was used for traffic control.
