With the bulk of their champion team returning this season, the Rotorua men's team are on the hunt for back-to-back titles in the Waikato/Bays premier interclub tennis competition.

The Rotorua team recorded a near perfect run last season in the inaugural interclub competition, comfortably beating Otumoetai in the final in March.

The 2015/16 season started last weekend with Rotorua picking up where they left off.

They defeated Tauranga Lawn Tennis Club 5-1 on Saturday in the opening round, at the Rotorua Tennis Club on Manuka Cres.

Rotorua won three of the four singles matches against Tauranga Lawn and both doubles matches.

Rotorua captain Shaun Tamai said most of the team from last season were back again this season to try to defend their title.

"That's our goal [to win again this season] but we will just be taking it game by game and we won't be taking anyone lightly," he said.

"It is pretty much the same team but we have a couple of new faces."

He said their two young guns from last season, Ryan and Nick Beamish, were not involved this season as they were focusing on other tennis competitions.

"We have a young guy Josh Caves who has joined us.

"He is working over in Kawerau and is based here so we have got him involved."

The format this season in the premier interclub competition is the same as last season

It sees teams play four singles and two doubles during each fixture.

Tamai explained the number of teams in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty-wide competition had gone down to eight mens teams this season.

"This year we only have eight teams, with Gate Pa and Thames Valley dropping out, but it is still a strong competition."

The Rotorua men's team play fortnightly, with their next match being played in Tauranga against Otumoetai on Saturday, September 26.

The Rotorua team that played at the weekend included Tamai, James Wilce, Jesse Galvin-Dawson, and Lionel Rogers.

Unfortunately, Rotorua have not entered a team in the women's premier interclub competition this season, despite a good showing last season.
