It was all smiles and pats on the back for the Rotorua men's tennis team after they convincingly won their home semifinal against Hamilton.

The Rotorua side have earned a home final in the Waikato Bays interclub tennis competition after winning their semifinal at the Rotorua Tennis Club on Saturday.

The home side turned on perhaps their best performance of the season to win the fixture against Hamilton 6-0, taking all four singles matches and both doubles matches.

It means they will meet Otumoetai in the final after the Tauranga side defeated Whakatane in the other semifinal on Saturday 4-2.

The final is scheduled to be played at the Rotorua Tennis Club on Saturday March 7, but may be postponed to March 14.

Rotorua got off to a flying start on Saturday winning both doubles matches.

Rotorua's No1 pairing of Shaun Tamai and Sean Martin won the first set 7-5 against Hamilton's Matt Johnson and Steve Pett, only to drop the second set 4-6.

In the deciding super tie-breaker set the battle continued until it was eventually won by the Rotorua pair 15-13.

Rotorua's No2 pairing of James Wilce and Lionel Rogers were able to exact some revenge in their doubles match, defeating Hamilton's Warren Lovegrove and Kevin Elliot 6-3, 6-4. Wilce and Rogers lost to Lovegrove and Elliot in round-robin play.

Tamai went up against a fiery Johnson in the No1 singles match, making a big statement on his home court to win 6-2, 6-0.

Tamai had lost to Johnson in Hamilton during round-robin play and was stoked to get the win and help his team progress to the final.

"It was a totally different surface in Hamilton so being on my home surface I was determined to do well," he said. "It was a great team effort at the end of the day and we had great support."

Rotorua were guaranteed a place in the final when impressive No3 Wilce posted a big win against Hamilton's Lovegrove 6-3, 6-2.

Wilce said it was a great effort from the team to make the final. "Yeah, very happy with that ... it is what we have been aiming for."

Rotorua No2 Martin was made to fight hard against Pett in the No2 singles match. Martin dropped the first set 3-6 but recovered in the second to win 6-4. This started a battle of attrition between the two which finally resulted in the third set going to Martin 7-5.

Rotorua's Jesse Galvin-Dawson, who has been in good form all season, completed the clean sweep on Saturday by beating Hamilton's Phil Hempstead 6-4, 6-2.

A good crowd turned out at the Rotorua Tennis Club on Manuka Cres to support the home side.

- Men's semifinals: Rotorua 6 Hamilton 0, Otumoetai 4 Whakatane 2.
