A teenage girl has admitted stealing 82-year-old Gavin Hayes' car - a crime that shocked Rotorua.
Janaya Ashby, 17, pleaded guilty to seven charges in the Rotorua District Court yesterday, including unlawfully taking Mr Hayes' car, failing to stop, driving dangerously and driving while forbidden, all on October 9.
Shealso admitted unlawfully taking another car last month, burglary and a breach of bail.
Last week The Daily Post reported how Mr Hayes had been targeted by teenagers, who were stealing from him. His car was stolen twice and was written off during the latest theft.
The story led to Mr Hayes being donated a car and more than $4000 was raised for him.
He said he was feeling much better after yesterday receiving his permanent car from Rent-a-dent, which he described as "beautiful". He said he now planned a trip to Taumarunui to visit his wife's grave.
