The Bay of Plenty men's sevens team will play for the Bowl on day two at the TECT National Sevens after losing all three games in Pool D on a tough day one.
Up against Hawke's Bay in their final game of the day they already knew they could not make the cup quarter finals and ended up going down 21-17.
Bay of Plenty had the ball in the dying stages and looked likely to score a winner, but Hawke's Bay held strong and turned the ball over for the win and a spot at the top of Pool D.
Taranaki finished the day with a 24-5 win over Canterbury in their final Pool D match and will join Hawke's Bay in the Cup quarter finals.
Meanwhile, in the women's tournament, Auckland sealed their place at the top of Pool A with a 24-5 win over Canterbury. they will be joined in the Cup quarter finals by Otago who beat Taranaki 26-15 in their final game.

The Waikato men's sevens team have made it clear they are desperate to defend their TECT National Sevens title with three wins from three to top Pool B on day one.
They beat Auckland 19-0 in their third game to complete a perfect day and book a spot in the Cup quarter finals tomorrow.
The other Pool B match, between southern rivals Otago and Southland, saw Southland take a hard fought 17-14 win.
In men's Pool C, Tasman also completed a perfect day and secured top spot with a 24-10 win over Wellington, while Northland beat South Canterbury 19-0.
In women's Pool B, defending champions Manawatu made it three wins from three with a 31-12 win over Counties Manukau. Wellington beat North Harbour by the same scoreline, 31-12.

The Bay of Plenty women have finished day one on a high with three wins from three matches.
Their 24-7 win over Waikato in their final round robin match ensured the home side finish at the top of Pool C and will play in the Cup quarter finals tomorrow.
Waikato were Bay of Plenty's toughest opposition on the day and they were first to score, taking a 7-0 lead. Bay of Plenty hit back through Hope Garner to trail 7-5 at halftime.
The fuse was lit for Bay of Plenty in the second half as they took command. Autumn-Rain Daly-Stephens scored a quick fire double to make it 17-7 before Kiana Tahere put the cherry on top with a try under the posts.
In the other Pool C match-up, Tasman produced a gritty 14-7 win over Hawke's Bay.
In men's Pool D, Hawke's Bay bounced back from first round defeat to beat Taranaki 38-12.
The final round of play in men's Pool A saw Manawatu go down 24-7 to Counties Manukau and North Harbour dismantle Wairarapa Bush 40-0.

It is starting to look like a tough day at the office for the Bay of Plenty men's team who have now lost both of their Pool D games, going down 24-7 to Canterbury.
Bay of Plenty put themselves under pressure frequently and Canterbury are too good a side not to capitalise. Canterbury led 19-0 at halftime and Bay of Plenty's Rewita Biddle scored a fantastic solo try in the second half but it was not enough to avoid a second consecutive defeat.
In men's Pool C, Tasman backed up their strong win over Northland earlier in the day with a comfortable 26-7 win against South Canterbury.
In women's Pool A, Auckland made it two wins from two and a second clean sheet when they beat Otago 41-0.
The other Pool A sides Canterbury and Taranaki went head-to-head with Canterbury emerging 24-19 winners.

The Bay of Plenty women are two from two at the TECT National Sevens in Tauranga. They produced an emphatic 26-0 win over Tasman in their second game.
Bay of Plenty were patient in attack early on, shifting the ball side to side, and it paid off when Mererangi Paul sliced through a gap to score the opening try.
Autumn-Rain Stephens-Daly was the next to cross the try line for the Bay, scooping up a loose ball near halfway and racing away to make it 14-0 at halftime.
Rebecca Kersten and Kiana Tahere scored a try each in the second half to wrap up the 26-0 romping.
In the match-up between the other two women's Pool C teams, Waikato absolutely hammered Hawke's Bay 50-0.
In women's Pool B, defending champions Manawatu made it two wins from two when they beat Wellington 29-12 and Counties Manukau beat North Harbour 31-12.
In men's Pool A, Manawatu bounced back from a loss to North Harbour to beat Wairarapa Bush 22-14.
Defending champions Waikato picked up their second win in Pool B, beating Otago 36-21, and Auckland also made it two from two with a 26-5 win over Southland.
In men's Pool C, Wellington put on a show with a 38-0 win over Northland.
The teams now have a chance for some rest and recovery as the official welcome and opening ceremony takes centre stage.

One of the big questions at this year's tournament is whether Mitre 10 Cup winners Auckland's superb form in the 15-aside game will transfer to sevens. They started to answer that in their first Pool B match with a 24-14 win over Otago.
In men's Pool C, Wellington took down South Canterbury comfortably with a 26-0 win and Tasman demolished Northland 40-7.
In Pool D, Canterbury beat Hawke's Bay 17-12 and the Bay of Plenty men started their campaign with a 10-0 loss to Taranaki.
Bay of Plenty had all the ball in the first half but were stuck inside their own 22m. Taranaki turned the ball over and it was former Steamer Jesse Parete who scored the opening try.
Taranaki scored again just before halftime and defended their 10-0 lead in the second half to claim victory.
Meanwhile, the Counties Manukau men won their second game of the day, 22-7 over North Harbour in Pool A.
In women's Pool C, Wellington started their campaign with a 33-21 win over Counties Manukau.
In Pool A, Auckland were in commanding form as they cruised to a 24-0 win over Taranaki and Otago beat their southern rivals Canterbury 24-12.
11.10am
Counties Manukau scored the first try of the tournament, it took Pisi Leilua just 10 seconds to cross the line against Wairarapa Bush in their Pool A match-up. Counties went on to win that game 24-0.
In the first women's game, Waikato made short work of Tasman in Pool C, winning 33-12.
The Bay of Plenty women started their campaign, in Pool C, with a 22-12 win over Hawke's Bay. Hawke's Bay opened the scoring through a converted try to Shaylee Tipiwai.
It was not long before Bay of Plenty hit back through try scoring machine and captain Rebecca Kersten. She scored again minutes later and Bay of Plenty led 10-7 at halftime.
Hawke's Bay scored first in the second half to lead 12-10, but Bay of Plenty hit back with a superb solo try from Mahina Paul to make it 15-12.
Bay of Plenty's Kiani Tahere was rewarded for an industrious display with a try in the dying minutes to make it 22-12.
In men's Pool A, North Harbour beat Manawatu 26-12 and in Pool B, the defending champions Waikato started with a 27-12 win over Southland.
In women's Pool B, Manawatu beat North Harbour 27-5.

Tauranga is set for two days of non-stop sevens action when the 2018 TECT National Sevens kicks off.
New Zealand's top 16 men's teams and top 12 women's teams face off in the tournament at the Tauranga Domain, with games split between two pitches today and tomorrow.
The first women's pool match kicks off at 10.05am today with Counties Manukau taking on Wairarapa Bush on field one, in Pool A. Meanwhile, in the men's draw, defending champions Waikato play Tasman, in Pool C, at the same time on field two.
The Bay of Plenty men's team, coached by Sean Horan, get their pool play underway at 10.25am on field two against Hawke's Bay, in Pool C.
And the women's team, coached by Rodney Gibbs, kick off theirs at 12.25pm against Taranaki on field one, in Pool D.
We also have Bay of Plenty sevens royalty in the house today with the freshly crowned All Blacks Sevens and Black Ferns Sevens Player of the Year winners Scott Curry and Michaela Blyde taking the rare opportunity to be spectators.
