Greetings again.

Where to start this week?

There have been a number of things going on in politics recently but let me start at home base first.

We understand that the gates are to close on the Tachikawa mill shortly. It is not as if this is breaking news to me because I heard of this possibility around a year ago. However, they were able to get out of that situation then, but it looks as if that there is no going back now.

I want to acknowledge the unions who brought all of the MPs and the mayor together to talk things through. We hope it is possible that iwi might find space in the deliberations but regardless, I feel very sorry for the workers and their families.

Stay strong. I hope that by working together we can find a positive way forward.

To other kaupapa now.

Recently, my colleague Tariana Turia criticised Maori Television Service for their coverage of the kohanga reo issues. Some have asked why she would do that. The kohanga reo is a real treasure to the Maori world and as such must be looked after. Sure there are issues but we should leave those to be addressed by the experts.

Let us remember that we are talking about one section of the kohanga reo movement and the spending of a few, not the whole kohanga reo movement. The outcomes of the investigation will be known in the near future.

In more positive news, last week in Parliament we had treaty bills presented which passed their first and second readings (Tuhoe, Ngati Haua and Ngati Koroki Kahukura and Mokomoko). The process of settlement is such an important step for iwi. Aside of settling historical grievances by way of compensation, apologies from the Crown and other avenues of settling, there is nothing as profound as learning the true nature of our shared history. Further, when MPs give speeches to these various bills, those words become part of history and are forever recorded in the Hansard journals, which is the official record of everything the takes place in Parliaments chamber. I was so pleased to be able to speak to these bills, and be part of that closure process.

To conclude, the "Rotorua Pink Walk" which has been set up to support those suffering with breast cancer is happening tomorrow. I encourage you to get along and support the cause if you are able to. Don't forget to take some money to contribute to the cause.

E nga tai o te roto, tena ano tatou katoa. Me timata ki hea i tenei wiki?

He aha ia i pera ai?

He mahi whakahirahira tenei mo nga iwi katoa.

I welcome your feedback. Email mpwaiariki@parliament.govt.nz or phone 0508 924 274.
