Te Pumanawa o Toku Ate Rogers is only 9 years old but she already has a number of accolades when it comes to singing.

The Rotorua girl entered the Rotorua Speech and Drama Competition for the first time this year "just for fun" and won the Elizabeth Trophy coming first in her age group.

Late last month she took home the Dawson-Falconer trophy for the top under 10-year-old girl singer at the New Zealand Aria Awards.

"My friends always ask when I get back to school, 'did you win?'"

To which she said she always replied: "Yes."

She said singing was fun and helped her confidence.

"I started singing when I was 3. It's fun. My favourite song to sing is Colours of the Wind from Pocahontas.

"I like the feeling of the song and how it connects to the movie and nature."

She said another one of her favourites was singing Amazing Grace to the tune of House of the Rising Sun.

Some of her favourite artists are Elvis, Gin Wigmore, Michael Jackson and The Sapphires, but she said she's always looking for something new.

Te Pumanawa goes to Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Koutu and affiliates with six tribes: Ngati Whakaue, Ngati Pikiao, Ngati Whare, Ngai Tuhoe, Ngati Porou, Ngapuhi.

Her dad, Hunia Rogers, said he was proud and had high hopes for his daughter.

"She only started speech and drama this year but she has been singing since she was 3.

"I find a lot of our kids are talented but they're not supported."

He said Te Pumanawa went to after-school lessons at John Paul College and that's also where she learned speech and drama.

He said her teachers, Elicia Hulton and Gabrielle Thurston, were amazing.

"She is also an awesome athlete, she won the Rotorua cross country and came third in the Bay of Plenty cross crountry this year and also captained the Bay U9s touch rugby this year.

"We make do with running her here there and everywhere. It's worth it."
