A woman who died in a road crash on State Highway 2 near Te Puke yesterday morning can now be identified as 36-year-old Sing Yieng Pau, from Te Puke, known locally as Lisa Yieng.

She died after trying to do a U-turn when a logging truck struck her vehicle outside of Te Puke on Saturday morning, police said.

Western Bay road policing sergeant Wayne Hunter said the woman didn't see a logging truck on the road before she pulled out into its path.

"She was travelling on the road towards Te Puke and she pulled over on the road to let some cars pass and she obviously didn't see a logging truck going in the same direction and she did a U-turn in front of the truck," he said.

"The vehicles collided and the truck basically t-boned her. The truck had no way of stopping in time."

The woman died on the way to hospital.

Mr Hunter said there had previously been a crash on the same stretch of road however he believed the road was safe and accidents were generally caused by drivers being distracted.
