Teaching your children right from wrong isn't always easy but help is available if you need it. Photo / File

Tēnā koutou katoa. Well, one week of the school holidays down and a few days to go. I was trying to figure out what to mention this week.

Should I mention the criminals who have been caught and held to account by the excellent work of all our staff, or do I thank one of our numerous partners like last week?

Then it dawned on me: this week I want to thank all of you, our community, for being there helping us as we do our job.

Our purpose is to ensure everyone can be safe and feel safe and having a community that are supportive of police and share our vision of being the safest country makes our job easier and rewarding.

I also want to show my appreciation to all the parents and caregivers out there doing a fantastic job raising their kids.

Teaching them the difference between right and wrong, providing them with life experiences that will help them in future years. Parenting is not easy, and each day can bring more trials and tribulations.

To the parents out there that are struggling, there are a number of agencies that can help. Our skilled youth services team and school community officer have the names and details of these groups. If you need some advice or direction, please feel free to make contact early as we all know that prevention is the best cure.

And to you kids, remember to be respectful and grateful to your parents and caregivers. Strangely enough they were all youngsters as well and have been through the teenage years.

A common comment from kids is that parents don't listen. Well kids, you need to remember to listen to them as well. It is a two way street.

Stay safe, Fane Troy.
