The organisers of the Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge say they are thrilled with the announcement Taupo is a world class mountain biking destination.
It was recently designated the status of a Silver Level Ride Centre by the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA). It is the first Ride Centre in
New Zealand, and only the second silver level in the world. The announcement brings the total number of Ride Centres in the world to 12, with only three designated outside the US.
IMBA director of consulting services Chris Bernhardt said it proved New Zealand has "amazing riding" and behind the trail was a "community of mountain bikers, land managers, volunteers, and tourism businesses that ensure a positive experience".
Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge event director Kay Brake said organisers were proud of the work Bike Taupo had done in order to achieve the status. "It certainly places Taupo and New Zealand firmly on the worldwide mountain biking map. We're also excited that entrants in this year's event will get to experience some of the areas which have become New Zealand's first Ride Centre."
The 36th edition of the Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is being held on November 24.
