Taupo District Council has appointed a new chief executive.
Acting chief executive Gareth Green was appointed to the role at an extraordinary council meeting last week. After acting in the position since the departure of former chief executive Rob Williams in May Mr Green will take up the role permanentlyeffective immediately.
A Taupo district local Mr Green grew up in Turangi and attended Taupō-nui-a-Tia College.
As well as extensive knowledge of the local community, he also brings 16 years of local government experience to the role. Mr Green joined Taupo District Council in 2005 as the principal planner for resource consents after working at Whangarei District Council, the Department of Conservation and New Plymouth District Council.
Other positions at Taupo District Council have included manager of resource consents, planning manager, and group manager of environmental services. He has held the role of policy and operations group manager for the past four years.
Mr Green said it was a privilege to have been appointed to chief executive and he is especially proud to have come from within the Taupo District Council ranks.
"The local government sector is rapidly evolving and it's an exciting time to be given the chance to lead a talented team of people," Mr Green said.
"The confidence council has shown in being able to appoint from within our staff is a reflection of the work of the whole council team - each person has the best interests of our community in mind in everything they do and I hope we'll be able to continue this great work in years to come."
Mayor David Trewavas said council had a strong selection of candidates put their hand up for the role and believes Mr Green's selection is testament to his professional work ethic.
"I know Gareth will continue to lead the organisation towards many great things in the future," he said.
Mr Green said he was looking forward to taking on his new role and was grateful for the support of council colleagues as well as his wife Kylie and children Emily, Quinn, and Luke.
