One person is in critical condition after being trapped when a car and truck collided on Broadlands Rd, near Taupō.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson said two fire trucks and one support vehicle responded to the incident.

“There was one person trapped. We have gotten them out of the vehicle using our rescue tools,” the spokesperson said.

The crash happened close to the intersection of Broadlands Rd and White Rd. It was reported at about 1pm on Thursday.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said ambulance services were notified of a motor vehicle incident in Broadlands Forest at 1.01pm.

“Two ambulances and one helicopter have responded,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said one person was treated and transported to Waikato Hospital in critical condition.

A police bulletin, issued online at 1.17pm, said the road was blocked and advised motorists to take an alternate route.

A local truck driver who was two minutes behind the crash told the Herald the shell-shocked truck driver involved in the accident got out of the cab and sat on a nearby bank.

“I went up to him and comforted him. Another lady did the same until the first police car arrived,” he said.

“I started throwing dirt on the road because there was diesel running down the road because of the crack to the fuel tank.”

He said the truck driver was initially in shock following the crash, but “went downhill an hour later. He was really bad.”

He described the scene as “a bloody mess”.
