Those in Rotorua with a sweet tooth or a love for baking are being encouraged to put it to good use for this year's SPCA Cupcake Day.

This year's fundraising day is next Monday, August 6.

Nearly half a million animals have been helped since the first national Cupcake Day was held 10 years ago, and each year the SPCA offers love, care and shelter to more than 45,000 animals.

Rotorua SPCA manager Sue Kinsella is encouraging the community to get behind the fundraising event.

She said it was a fun way to show your support, with all the funds raised going back to the animals at the Rotorua shelter.

"Our main expense each year is vet costs, so all monies raised come back to the shelter so we can provide care for animals in need of treatment."

Kinsella said, each year, staff and volunteers baked and sold about 1000 cakes and slices, which were sold for $3 each.

"It's a bit of fun, and we really enjoy seeing some of the wonderful creations our volunteers make for us each year."

She said $300,000 was raised across the country last year, and the organisation hoped to beat that this year.

BNZ Rotorua store manager Amy Callaghan said the branch would be taking part again this year.

"We've got a number of staff passionate about the cause."

Callaghan said most of the staff had animals and were animal lovers.

"We love the fact we are supporting the local SPCA. They do great work for our community and our furry friends' community."

She said they also had volunteers who came in and helped them during the day.

"We have a bit of fun with it, and it's fun for our customers as they get to support a local cause and get some great baking at the same time.

There are many ways for people to get involved in the SPCA Cupcake Day.

Cupcakes can be delivered to schools, retirement homes or places of work, and the Rotorua SPCA team will be out and about on Cupcake Day.

To ensure you don't miss out, you can pre-order by Friday. Payment can be made by direct debit or cash on the day.

To secure an animal friendly morning tea treat for your workplace, contact Rotorua SPCA by email rotorua.manager@spca.nz or call (07) 349 2955.
