Rotorua's Supper Club has raised a whopping $142,000 - an event organisers describe as "out of the stratosphere".

The glitzy Rotorua event on Wednesday night raised the record amount, which will go towards the Ronald McDonald House Family Retreats at Ngongotaha. The retreats provide a holiday spot for sick children to come to Rotorua with their families.

Supper Club organiser Rob Parry said the event showcased the best of the Rotorua community.

He believed it was a record total for all the Supper Club events around the country - beating bigger cities like Auckland and Christchurch.

"It was incredible, we have created a monster, haven't we?"

He said while they went in hoping for a good total the final amount raised "smashed anything we expected".

"The amount raised is just out of the stratosphere."

Mr Parry said the event showcased the very best of what the Rotorua community was like.

Last year the event raised $100,000, which was a Rotorua Supper Club record.

"If you told me at the start we would get $100,000, we would have taken it and been absolutely happy."

Mr Parry said there was a special feeling when the amount was announced to the crowd before they went off to various spots for dinner.

"Everyone was cheering. We have a lot of people invested in the success of the night and people were just thrilled."

Family say Ngongotaha retreat superb

25 Feb 10:34 PM

One person who knows just how valuable the Ronald McDonald House charities are is Philly Angus. The Rotorua woman, whose daughter Stella has just finished treatment for cancer, was one of those who went along.

Mrs Angus described the night as "phenomenal".

"I was just amazed really at the support of the community for a worthwhile cause."

She said it was the first time she'd manage to get her hands on "lucrative" tickets for the event.

Mrs Angus said while the money raised for the retreats wouldn't directly be helping her family, it was helping the community which had been so amazing to them.

Her family had stayed at Ronald McDonald House in Auckland when Stella was first diagnosed, and said it was a godsend. While they hadn't been to the Ngongotaha retreat the family had been to similar ones through other organisations.

"It is just such a precious time to get away as a family and enjoy a holiday."

Win Macmillan had been to every Supper Club with the same group.

"It's a great event and it's fantastic what they do for the children."

Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand chief executive officer Wayne Howett said the amount raised was "a massive effort" and made it the most successful Supper Club to date.

"The Rotorua Supper Club has always been a great success, however, this year, through the perseverance of the team and the generosity of the Rotorua community, the event went above and beyond and raised more than any of our other Supper Clubs across the country, ever."

Mr Howett said the event exceeded expectations and they were overwhelmed by the amazing support and generosity of the Rotorua community.

"The funds will go a long way in supporting families during their children's medical journeys."
