The new comedy play by Rotorua Little Theatre has got "madcap humour to tickle your funny bone and stir your heart", according to its director.

The Supermarket Sisterhood, opening at Shambles Theatre tonight, has a cast of 11.

In the play, the women who operate the checkouts at the Discount Co supermarket are facing a new boss and the prospect of losing their jobs due to newly installed automated checkout aisles.

Director Shirley Young said there were all sorts of characters who came into the Discount Co supermarket who were a bit "eccentric and different".

She said it was an original play written by Tauranga-based playwright Devon Williamson and the cast had spent six weeks rehearsing.

She said most were seasoned actors, though two would be performing for the first time on the Shambles stage.

"I just think it's a fun thing at the end of winter. It's nice and light, and it's great humour.

"People should just come along, relax and have a laugh."

Ms Young said she was looking forward to the season and enjoyed directing because she liked working with a team of people who were "down to do something different".

Cast member Craig Blank said it had been a "full on" six weeks of rehearsals.

He said this was his first show, and he was both excited and nervous.

He got into theatre because his partner was in a play so he did stage managing for both Bedroom Farce and Shirley Valentine, as well as building the set for Shirley Valentine, "so then acting was the next step".

Mr Blank said highlights of preparing for the shows were working with Ms Young and the rest of the cast, and learning the trade.

"There's a lot of laughter. It's a great comedy and got some great talent on stage too."

Cast member Emily McGowan said this was her second show on stage and she was "nervous as heck".

She said she liked the connection that was made with all the people who put the show together, and that it had been nice getting a couple of new people in.

"It's been like a second family for a number of years."
