Local Bryce Steiner has sped into the finals of the 2017 Technical Welding Services World Invitation 240s Superstock Championships.

The previous 2015 champion progressed to tonight's final after he amassed 58 points in last night's qualifying races, enough to easily advance to the three-race finals series at the Paradise Valley Speedway.

Another three Rotorua Superstock drivers - Scott Hewson, Lance Ashton and Tony Fabish will also be part of the 26-car field with the chance to win the championship, after a thrilling Friday night of qualifying racing, involving over 70 drivers from all over New Zealand.

The fast track took its toll on man and machine throughout the night, with other local hopefuls like David Elsworth, Grendon Beazley and Ken Hunter having mixed fortunes.

However they will all have one last chance to qualify via the Repechage race which will start tonight's racing - with the top 3 finishers going through to the finals field.

Former South Island Champion Brett Nicholls of Nelson will start from the favoured pole position, after coming close to qualifying before being hit out of contention by Wellington's Alan Levien.

Five drivers have already earned their place in the 26-car final, including the four international drivers taking part and last year's winner Scott Joblin.
