Stats NZ data snapshots of iwi members' lifestyles

The Census data for Te Arawa iwi Ngati Rangiteaorere have been released by Statistics New Zealand.

According to last year's Census, there were 435 people who affiliated with the tribe - 48.3 per cent (210) were male and 51 per cent (222) female.

The figures are part of Statistics New Zealand's iwi profiles which give a breakdown of the number of members living in each region throughout the country as well as information about language, education, income and housing.

Other key facts of Ngati Rangiteaorere included:

• The median age was 27.8 years.

• 21.4 per cent identified Ngati Rangiteaorere as their sole iwi affiliation, while 77.9 per cent were also affiliated with other iwi.

• 29.7 per cent could hold a conversation about everyday things in te reo Maori.

For people aged 15 years and over affiliating with Ngati Rangiteaorere and living in New Zealand on March 5, 2013:

• 44.7 per cent stated that they had never been a regular smoker.

• 73.9 per cent held a formal qualification.

• The median income was $23,500.

• 70.3 per cent living in main urban areas were in the labour force.
