A section of State Highway 36 in the Bay of Plenty has been closed after a car hit a power pole.

Emergency services were called to the scene between Taumata Rd and Oropi Rd about 3.10pm following reports a car had struck a power pole.

“Fortunately, the driver did not sustain serious injuries; however, the power pole and lines are completely blocking the road,” police said.

“It may take at least another hour to clear the road and motorists are asked to take alternative routes where possible.”
