State Highway 2 has been reopened after a serious crash in the Bay of Plenty.

Two people were injured in the two-vehicle crash on the highway, near White Pine Bush Rd and Murphy Rd at Awakeri.

A police spokeswoman said the crash was reported to police at 8.10am and the Serious Crash Unit was notified.

The highway was closed for more than three hours with detours in place.

The New Zealand Transport Agency reported that the crash scene was cleared and the highway reopened about 11.25am.

She said two people had been hurt in the crash, one with serious injuries and one with minor injuries.

The person in a serious condition had been taken to Whakatāne Hospital.
