A Whakatane man who was stabbed is now out of intensive care.

The 27-year-old was flown to Waikato Hospital last Tuesday after receiving stabbed wounds to his chest at a house in Hotene St. He required emergency surgery and was in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

Waikato District Health Board communications director Mary Ann Gill said today, the man is in a ward and is in a stable condition.

Awhina Patuwai, 25, had been charged over the incident in what police believed to be a domestic dispute. She appeared in the Whakatane District Court last Thursday and entered no plea to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and shoplifting charges.

Patuwai was remanded on bail and will re-appear in court on January 30, 2014.
