Although the summer holidays are a perfect time to relax, there are still plenty of opportunities in Taupō to get active or spectate some great sports.

The 26th Taupō Great Lake Relay is on February 13. The Traffic Management NZ Great Lake Relay covers the 155km around Lake Taupō.

Each team consists of nine to 18 members, either running or walking the entire distance around Lake Taupō.

The Smiths Sports Shoes/Asics Length of the Lake Relay caters for teams of four to eight who can run or walk to complete the eight legs, 67km from Pukawa on the southern end of the lake back to Taupō.

If you're really up for a challenge, take on one of the ultra-marathon options. Run or walk the Ledlenser 67km Length of the Lake or the 155km Great Lake Event!

Event Promotions general manager Murray Fleming says it makes for a great day out with friends, family or workmates, completing a relay around the length of the lake.

"It's a fun way of setting yourself a goal and is something completely different."

He says normally about 3000 people participate but they are aware numbers may be down a bit due to Covid.

"It's just so cool to see teams participating, having a wonderful time and seeing people getting out and achieving personal goals."
